The total market rises to €37.9 billion (+8.4%). This growth is driven by life insurance (+12.7%), while non-life grows more moderately (+3.7%).

Life

In life insurance, the growth in branch 23 and other investment products confirms that savers are once again seeking returns within an insurance framework. At the same time, these figures highlight the growing importance of supplementary pensions. This responds to a statutory replacement rate of around 45% in Belgium (compared to about 54% in the EU). This also aligns with the ambitions of the Savings & Investment Union, which aims to channel more savings into investments. Pensions remain long-term products. Stable fiscal and policy frameworks are essential in this regard.

Non-life

In non-life insurance, demand remains robust. The figures mainly show growth in traditional lines such as motor, fire, and liability. This confirms the sector’s key role in protecting households and businesses. Each year, this amounts to around 4.2 million claims. At the same time, new risks are less explicitly reflected in the figures. Insurers are increasingly focusing on loss prevention, both through prevention measures (including those related to new forms of mobility) and through reintegration pathways for people with long-term work incapacity.

Key figures

Total market: €37.9 billion (+8.4%)

Life: €20.5 billion (+12.7%)

Individual life: +19.6%

Branch 23: +31.0%

Niet-leven: €17,3 miljard (+3,7%)

Motor: +4.5%

Fire: +3.0%

Legal protection insurance: +7.8%

The insurance sector also continues to evolve as an employer

According to Assuralia, in 2024 the sector employs:

21,851 employees in insurance companies

±43,900 professionals in total (including brokers and intermediaries)

After years of decline, the trend is reversing: 1,916 hires vs. 1,716 departures in 2024

Some notable characteristics:

55.6% women, with growth in management positions

80% highly educated (bachelor’s/master’s degrees)

Average age: 45 years

The sector is hiring again, while continuing to face structural developments such as digitalisation and an ageing workforce.

The first figures from Assuralia’s 2025 annual report show a sector in growth.
